Traditional vs. Damon

  • Traditional braces require elastic “ties” that bind the wire in.  More force must be applied to the teeth to overcome this binding effect.
    More force=More pain!
  • Low-friction Damon braces allow for much lighter force to move the teeth.
    Less force=Less pain!
  • Elastic “ties” attract plaque around the brackets ad are harder to keep fresh and clean.
  • Damon braces are “tie-less” so they are much easier to clean.  Patients who want colors with their braces can choose colors under the wire as long as brushing is excellent.
  • Most traditional braces are bigger and bulkier.
  • Damon braces are smaller and less conspicuous.
  • Most styles of braces have edges that catch your lip and cheeks more easily.
  • Damon braces are smoother against the lips and cheeks.

  • Treatment time is longer.

  • Treatment time is usually shorter.
  • More appointments are usually needed to change ties and re-activate forces.
  • Fewer appointments are needed since gates fully engage the wire from day one.
  • Time between appointments is shorter because the ties around the braces need to be changed more often.
  • Longer time between appointments
Without loss of effectiveness in moving the teeth.
  • Treats your teeth, but has less positive influence on facial features.
  • Damon braces treat the teeth and have more dramatic, positive effects on facial features.
